The Sixth Swan

MindFlights, May 2008

Cynthia visits a friend for a pleasant summer weekend, only to stumble upon a frightening family secret. Published in MindFlights. This magazine has sadly ceased publication.

This story grew out of my long-time interest in swan maidens and the fairy tale of The Six Swans. The town in the story is a combination of two small Pennsylvania towns, one where I grew up and one where I live now. I’m ashamed to say I took many of the bad things about them, but few of the good. Both towns offer a lot more for residents than the one in the story!

The picture of the swan was taken one fall day in Martha's Vineyard. Mute swans, the swans we all think of from fairy tales, aren't native to North America, but I still like to see the introduced ones in parks and on lakes.
